Hannah Williams & the Affirmations
Hannah Williams and the Affirmations are a Grammy-nominated band from Bristol, UK. A force in original Soul music; they are known for their work with Jay Z on the song "4:44" and for their own album "Late Nights and Heartbreak", which was recorded with legendary groove-maker Malcolm Catto.
The band is fronted by the singer Hannah Williams, who is known for her deep and powerful voice, often being referred to as a "Hurricane of Soul" and comparable to the likes of Janis Joplin, Sharon Jones, Bill Withers and Adele. She is also known as a torchbearer for sexual equality and the power of femininity.
Hannah Williams first caught public attention after forming "The Tastemakers" with musicians from Winchester, UK. Their debut album was released on Record Kicks and the lead single "Work it Out" became a sleeper hit on the airwaves all over the world; eventually garnering over a million views on YouTube. The Tastemakers split shortly after and Hannah immersed herself in the Bristol music scene, where she formed "The Affirmations". The project took on a new life and was paired up with UK producer Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentric, Mulatu, DJ Shadow, Floating Points...) in order to record their first (and Hannah's second) LP. "Late Nights and Heartbreak" was recorded in the winter of 2015 and released in November 2016. Within 6 months of the release, the album caught the attention of Hip Hop royalty Jay-Z who, along with the producer No I.D., was struck by the honesty and beauty of the album's title track, so much so that they structured their own title track around it. "4:44" was released July 2017 and became a worldwide hit; since then, Hannah Williams and the Affirmations have become one of the most hotly tipped new bands in the world. They have attracted media attention from everywhere: Billboard US and Brazil, Complex UK and US, Rolling Stone US, NY Times, Metro UK to name a few, and regular rotation on KCRW, KDHX, BBC 1/2/6 and FIP Radio France, among many others.
Blessed by the late Sharon Jones, Hannah Williams and the Affirmations are also renowned for their energetic live shows, which are regarded by the media as impeccable due not only to Hannah’s vocal prowess, but also to the band's musicianship being of the highest calibre. This has lead them to grace such prestigious stages as the Blue Note Tokyo, New Morning in Paris, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Mojo Club in Hamburg, as well as contemporary spotlights such as Eurosonic in Groeningen and Sofar Sounds, capturing the hearts of (among others): Cat Power, Huey Morgan, Charles Bradley and Craig Charles.
